Solar Water Heating

Residential Solar Water Heating. Get Into Hot Water.

A solar water heating system efficiently uses the sun’s energy to preheat hot water. This innovative and simple technology makes renewable energy accessible and easy to install on both residential and commercial applications. Solar water heaters improve their owner’s comfort in addition to reducing their environment footprint and providing energy savings. The Solensis solar water heating system uses the energy from the sun to preheat the water before it goes into the traditional hot water tank. By preheating the water with solar energy, the traditional water heater requires less energy to heat the water up to the desired temperature.

How it works

The Pre-Heating

Propylene glycol circulates within a closed loop between the energy pack and the solar collectors on the roof. There is about 6 litres of this food grade, non-toxic fluid in this loop. The fluid has a lower freezing point and higher boiling point than water while still being able to quickly absorb heat. The solar collectors face south for optimal solar gain. Heat is transferred from the propylene glycol to the domestic water heat exchanger which is in the energy pack. The heat exchanger is very efficient at transferring the heat and also ensures that the propylene glycol and the hot water do not mix.

The energy pack is the box installed on the side of the preheating storage tank. It is pre-engineered and contains many important components such as the propylene glycol pump, the heat exchanger, the system controller, and filling valves and safety features. The solar heated water is accumulated in the preheating storage tank. When there is a hot water draw in the home, solar heated water enters the traditional water heater instead of cold water. The traditional water heater heats the water to the desired temperature. On a sunny day, this may not be necessary. The solar water heater can preheat for traditional water heating systems using electric elements, natural gas, propane or heating oil to heat the water.
